Kuhmo’s tourism operators prepare for winter visitors – a brand-new weekly program highlighting local strengths has been published.

As the number of international flights arriving in Kainuu increases and tourist volumes continue to grow, Kuhmo has also been preparing for the upcoming winter in close cooperation with local partners. A weekly program—piloted already last July and created together with local tourism companies and other operators such as museums—proved to be successful, and a similar version has now been compiled for the winter season as well. The weekly program, titled Winter in Kuhmo, highlights the region’s local strengths and a diverse selection of winter activities.

“Kuhmo’s most important strengths are its rich cultural offerings, unique nature sites such as the numerous rapids and the activities connected to them, as well as a wide variety of program services. Having nature and accommodation is not enough. Visitors need things to do,” says Jari Virtanen, Hotel Manager of Hotel Kalevala.

The weekly program inspires visitors to plan their holiday

The activities mentioned by Virtanen are showcased in the weekly program starting in January 2026. The offerings include, for example, rapid floating on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., sauna therapy on Tuesdays at 6 p.m., various nature excursions throughout the week, and an example Culture Day, which includes visits to notable Kuhmo architectural sites, traditional rönttönen pastries, Kalevala and runo-song traditions at Juminkeko, as well as wartime history at the Winter War Museum.

Some activities listed in the weekly program are also available on other days. They are included in the schedule primarily as inspiration, helping visitors plan their own trip to Kuhmo. In addition to the activities featured in the weekly program, Kuhmo offers many other experiences worth exploring on the Visit Kuhmo website, and visitors are encouraged to contact service providers directly.

“The activities featured in the weekly program serve as inspiration and lower the threshold for visitors to participate. In addition to the listed options, we recommend enriching your stay with various events that take place in Kuhmo every week.”

A similar program bringing together such a wide range of operators has not been created in years, aside from last summer’s pilot. “Based on my inquiries, comprehensive weekly tourism programs of this scale were last produced in Kuhmo in the early 2000s,” says Inka Makkonen, Communications and Tourism Coordinator for the City of Kuhmo, who compiled the content.

Cooperation is also carried out with nearby tourism centers and networks. A regional Kainuu weekly program has been published on the Arctic Lakeland website, where visitors can find interesting activities across the entire Kainuu region.
