Kuhmo Music Institute Projects
Kuhmo Music Institute participates in a wide range of development and cooperation projects.
2026–2027 Studying the Advanced Syllabus in Basic Education in the Arts through Group Tuition
The joint project is coordinated by Käpylä Music Institute. Project partners include Kuhmo Music Institute, Pirkanmaa Music Institute, and the Folk Music and Global Music programmes of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
The project is funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
2025–2026 Pohjoisen hilpeät huilut – Flutes of the North
This project, funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education, provides short courses led by visiting teachers for flute students. Koillis-Lappi Music Institute also participates in the project.
The project gives flute students the opportunity to play in a flute orchestra and meet children and young people from another region who play the same instrument.
The project also aims to provide flute teachers at music institutes with new teaching methods, mentoring and opportunities for professional collaboration.
2022–2023 Itämyrsky III
The Itämyrsky Youth Symphony Orchestra brought together approximately 80 young musicians from Kuhmo Music Institute and Kuopio Conservatory.
The project was coordinated by Kuhmo Music Institute and funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
2020–2023 East ART – New Directions in Music in Eastern Finland, Erasmus+ Project
The project aimed to strengthen the expertise, knowledge and capacity for innovation of the participating music institutes in response to challenges caused by globalisation and sharply declining birth rates in their regions.
Another objective was to expand the international networks of the music institutes and improve the exchange of knowledge and experiences. These networks also provided insights into how similar structural challenges have been addressed elsewhere in Europe and encouraged the participating institutions to develop new solutions of their own.
The participating teachers represented three institutions: Keski-Karjala Music Institute, Pielinen Karelia Music Institute and Kuhmo Music Institute. The project was coordinated by Keski-Karjala Music Institute and funded by the European Union.
2022–2023 Tanssivat musiikkiopistot – Dancing Music Institutes
The project focused on solution-oriented approaches and positive pedagogy in basic education in the arts. It involved two music institutes where dance had recently been introduced as a new art form.
The project supported the resulting changes in the institutions’ operating cultures by increasing awareness of solution-focused working methods. Collaborative artistic works combining music and dance were also created as part of the project.
The project was coordinated by Kuhmo Music Institute in partnership with Lapland Music and Dance Institute and funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
2021–2022 Safeguarding the Continuity of Basic Education in the Arts
The aim of the project was to restore student numbers following the decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and enable more children to participate in early childhood music education and basic education in music.
Measures to support continuity included the acquisition of equipment for remote teaching.
The project was funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.
