The Agricultural Office provides assistance with agricultural subsidies, farm succession, giving up farming, starting and developing small businesses, project planning and implementation, and matters related to village activities.
General Information about Rural Kuhmo
Agriculture, forestry and related industries play a significant role in Kuhmo’s economy. Approximately 200 people work in traditional agriculture. The average cultivated area of farms is just under 40 hectares.
The main sectors of other rural businesses include timber harvesting, tourism, transport and fish processing.
Number of active farms as of 31 December 2025:
- Dairy farming: 28 farms
- Milk produced in 2024: 12.639 million litres, 395,000 litres per dairy farm
- Meat production: 5 farms
- Crop and horticultural production: 67 farms
- Other livestock production: 3 farms
Target Payment Schedule for Spring and Summer 2026 – Payments Processed by the Municipality
- National livestock subsidies: final payment for 2025 and advance payment for 2026 – April
- Natural constraint payment: approx. 5% – May
- Environmental compensation: approx. 15% – June
- Animal welfare compensation: approx. 50% – June
- Basic income support: approx. 5% – June
- Eco-scheme support: approx. 5%; wintertime plant cover 100% – June
- Redistributive income support: approx. 5% – June
- Young farmer support: approx. 5% – June
- Cattle premium: final payment – June
Agricultural Investment Aid and Start-up Aid for Young Farmers
Applications for agricultural investment aid and start-up aid for young farmers can be submitted throughout the year. Applications are processed by support periods following a selection procedure.

City of Kuhmo Development Grants for Agriculture in 2026
Financial assistance is available for:
- Preliminary assessments related to farm succession: 75% of costs, up to €375
- Preliminary production studies: 50% of costs, up to €250
- Paid farm relief services, up to 120 hours: the City reimburses half of the applicable hourly rate.
