Business and Work

Business Services

Every business, from a small local company to a large industrial enterprise, is important to the City of Kuhmo. Most businesses in Kuhmo are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Kuhmo has a diverse business community, with the wood products industry forming the backbone of the local economy. Over the years, a strong business network has developed around the forest sector, covering the entire value chain from timber harvesting to the transportation of finished products.

The City’s Business Services also play an active role in developing tourism. Recent projects include the development of tourism infrastructure and holiday home construction in the Kalevalankangas area, as well as the development of tourism products, including war history tourism.

The City of Kuhmo works closely with local schools, vocational institutions and universities and aims to be an active partner for businesses through joint development projects and investment initiatives.

Kuhmo – A Success Story in the Bioeconomy

Kuhmo is a leading example of Finland’s bioeconomy.

The local bioeconomy is built on a strong wood products industry, sustainable forestry, agriculture, renewable energy production and internationally recognised wildlife tourism under the Wild Taiga brand.

The City of Kuhmo’s development centre, Woodpolis, promotes innovative and energy-efficient timber construction in cooperation with companies, universities and research organisations.

The Woodpolis Industrial Area in Kantola is home to a unique forest industry ecosystem. The area hosts several internationally operating wood industry companies and produces more renewable energy annually than it consumes.

Approximately 65% of Kuhmo’s total primary energy consumption comes from renewable energy sources, making the city one of the leading municipalities in Finland in the use of renewable energy.
