Emergency Preparedness
Preparedness is important for both the municipality and its residents. Being prepared helps individuals and communities cope better with disruptions and recover more quickly from unexpected situations.
The 72-Hour Preparedness Recommendation
Finnish authorities recommend that every household should be prepared to manage independently for at least 72 hours during emergencies or major service disruptions, such as prolonged power outages.
Every household should have:
- drinking water
- food for at least three days
- essential medicines
- basic supplies such as flashlights, batteries and a battery-powered radio
For more information, visit the 72 Hours Preparedness website.
Power Outages
During periods of exceptionally high electricity demand, Finland may experience temporary power shortages. If necessary, electricity consumption may be reduced through planned power outages lasting approximately two hours.
The best way to prepare is to maintain a home emergency supply and follow official information provided by the authorities and your electricity network operator.

Emergency Information
In an emergency:
- Call 112 for urgent assistance.
- Download the 112 Suomi mobile application to receive official emergency alerts.
- Follow information published by the City of Kuhmo, rescue authorities, and other official sources.
- Avoid relying solely on information shared through social media.
Residents of Kuhmo can also subscribe to water supply interruption notifications through Kuhmon VesiEnergia Oy.
Emergency Warning Signal
The general warning signal is used to alert the public of immediate danger. It is always accompanied by an official emergency announcement.
If you hear the warning signal:
- Go indoors immediately.
- Close doors, windows and ventilation if instructed.
- Follow official announcements on the radio, television, the 112 Suomi app, or other official channels.
Everyday Preparedness
Everyone can improve their preparedness by maintaining a safe home and working environment, ensuring that smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are in working order, knowing emergency exits, and keeping essential emergency supplies at home.
It is also advisable to prepare for storms, floods and prolonged power outages.
