Pre-primary Education

The City of Kuhmo provides pre-primary education for all children during the year before they start school. In the town centre, pre-primary education is provided by early childhood education services at Tuupala Day-Care Centre.

Pre-primary education is provided in accordance with the Basic Education Act and comprises at least 700 hours per school year. Pre-primary education is free of charge. If a child also attends early childhood education outside pre-primary education hours, a fee is charged based on the family’s income and the amount of care required.

Pre-primary education is planned with the child’s individual needs in mind. Its aim is to strengthen the child’s positive self-image, self-esteem and confidence as a learner. Play and active, multisensory learning methods are an important part of pre-primary education. Activities are guided by the objectives of pre-primary education as well as the children’s needs and interests. Pre-primary education also plays an important role in identifying children’s needs for support at an early stage and providing appropriate assistance.

Pre-primary education serves as a bridge between early childhood education and school. It supports the development of skills needed for starting school while encouraging children to discover the joy of learning and develop their motivation to learn. Early childhood education and pre-primary education together form a coherent learning path and provide a foundation for lifelong learning.

Registration for pre-primary education is completed electronically through eVaka. The online registration form is available on the City of Kuhmo’s pre-primary education webpage. A printable paper registration form is also available and can be submitted to the information desk at Kuhmo Town Hall.

The registration period for pre-primary education is announced annually through the City of Kuhmo’s communication channels.
