Basic education

Basic education for grades 1–9 in the City of Kuhmo is provided at Tuupala Comprehensive School, located in the town centre. Basic education is part of the Growth and Learning Services sector.

Pupils starting first grade are enrolled in their designated local school through an electronic registration system. The school registration form is available on the City of Kuhmo website under City and Administration → Forms.

Students moving to Kuhmo during the school year must also complete the registration form and contact the school secretary.

At our school, special emphasis is placed on supporting each student’s individuality and helping every learner discover and develop their strengths and skills. We view local cultural diversity and individual differences as a source of richness and opportunity. Teaching also incorporates the local natural environment as an integral part of everyday life and learning.

The school year will also include several special celebrations. The City of Kuhmo will celebrate its 40th anniversary, the 160th anniversary of Kuhmo as a market town, and we will also take part in celebrating Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture.
