Kuhmo is celebrating an exceptional anniversary year in 2026. The City of Kuhmo celebrates its 40th anniversary, the municipality of Kuhmo its 160th anniversary, and Kuhmo Upper Secondary School its 70th anniversary. Kuhmo is also taking part in the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture year.

Kuhmo celebrates four decades as a town with the theme “Full of Life!” The theme represents joy, courage and doing things together – reflecting the rich and diverse life in Kuhmo. The anniversary year invites everyone to experience, participate and create memorable moments. Full of Life is about everyday life and celebration, roots and new beginnings – together, we are building a future full of life.

Kuhmo has a strong and highly valued culture of working together.
The City of Kuhmo warmly welcomes everyone to take part in the anniversary year – by organising their own programme, joining community activities or participating in events organised by the City and other local organisations.

Kuhmo hosts a rich variety of cultural events throughout the year. Highlights include the internationally renowned Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Sommelo Ethno Music Festival, celebrating folk music and traditional rune singing, and Joutsentanssi – Kuhmo Dance Festival, which draws inspiration for contemporary dance from the surrounding natural environment.

Numerous events created through local collaboration – including Römppäviikko, the Summer Musicians, Kuhmo Christmas, Kuhmo Winter and Hilpeä heinäkuu – together with Kuhmo’s vibrant arts and dance scene ensure that there is music, culture and something happening throughout the year.
