Vartius – International Border Crossing Point

Vartius is an international border crossing point, leading from Kuhmo to the Republic of Karelia, Russia.

The nearest places of interest on the other side of the border are the city of Kostomuksha and the Viena Karelian folklore villages of Vuokkiniemi, Venehjärvi, Uhtua and Jyskyjärvi. A passport and visa are required for crossing the border. You can apply for a visa at travel agencies in Kuhmo.
Vartius Border Guard Station
The Vartius border guard station is responsible for maintaining border safety and other statutory supervisory duties in its operating area. A 22.1 km stretch of the Finnish eastern border and external border of the European Union is guarded by the Vartius border guard station.
The border guard station oversees border crossing inspections at the Vartius international border crossing point and at Kajaani airport.
Kuhmo Border Guard Station
A 111.9 km stretch of the Finnish eastern border and external border of the European Union is guarded by the Kuhmo border guard station. A boundary stone dating back to the Treaty of Tyavzino of 1595 is located in southern Kuhmo. Currently, it is designated as border mark no. 663.
